Introduction Anthropometric and nutritional status data are essential for optimizing working conditions, workstation design, and occupational health strategies, contributing to the prevention of work-related disorders and accidents. The retail sector is particularly relevant due to its diverse workforce and frequent exposure to prolonged standing, manual handling, and high physical demands.
What the research examined
Methods This cross-sectional study aimed to develop an anthropometric database and assess the nutritional status of workers from a Portuguese food retail company, providing evidence to support ergonomic workstation and task redesign, as well as initiatives to promote worker health. Data were collected from 155 supermarket workers in Northern Portugal (117 women and 38 men, aged 18-64 years). A total of 28 anthropometric measurements and 7 body composition parameters were assessed.
What the findings mean
Results Men generally presented larger mean dimensions than women, except for hip breadth and seated elbow height. Men also showed a higher prevalence of overweight, while obesity was more frequent among women. Discussion The findings highlight a high prevalence of excess weight and low physical activity levels, reinforcing the need to update anthropometric data and integrate inclusive ergonomic design and workplace wellness programs.
